Popular gaming streamer IShowSpeed’s recent act of kindness towards a homeless man in Japan has been praised by many, but the amount of money he gave has been the subject of some debate.
On social media, popular gaming tabloid D.A. shared a video of IShowSpeed giving some cash to a homeless man lying by the side of the road. The tabloid claimed that IShowSpeed gave the man $20,000, but Twitter community notes have faulted it.
A Twitter community note reads: “IShowSpeed did not give someone $20,000, he gave him ¥20,000 which equate to $134.22 USD.”
This means that IShowSpeed’s act of kindness was still generous, but not to the same extent that was originally reported.
It is unclear why D.A. made the mistake of claiming that IShowSpeed gave the homeless man $20,000. It is possible that they simply miscalculated the conversion rate between yen and dollars. However, it is also possible that they deliberately exaggerated the amount in order to generate more clicks and engagement.
