Lil Tay, the controversial child rapper who rose to fame in 2018, has died by suicide. She was 16 years old.
The news was confirmed by journalist Kayla Nicole Jones on Twitter. Jones wrote: “You guys remember her? Known as Lil Tay ‘The Youngest Flexer’ she used to make viral videos today she just committed suicide it’s so sad cause she was young and precious RIP Lil Tay.”
Lil Tay’s family released a statement on Instagram, confirming her death and asking for privacy. The statement read: “It’s with a heavy heart that we share the devastating news of our beloved Claire’s sudden and tragic passing. We have no words to express the unbearable loss and undesirable pain. The outcome was entirely unexpected, and has left us all in shock. Her brother’s passing adds an even more unimaginable depth to our grief.
“During this time of immense sorrow, we kindly ask for privacy as we grieve this overwhelming loss. As circumstances surrounding Claire and her brother’s passing are still under investigation.”
Lil Tay first gained attention in 2018 when she began posting videos of herself on social media, rapping and flashing stacks of cash. She quickly became a viral sensation, with her videos amassing millions of views. However, her fame was short-lived. In 2018, it was revealed that Lil Tay’s mother was scripting her videos and that she was not actually as wealthy as she claimed to be.
Following the revelation, Lil Tay’s parents went into a custody battle. She eventually ended up living with her father in Canada. In recent years, Lil Tay had largely disappeared from the public eye. However, her social media accounts remained active, and she had recently posted a cryptic message on Instagram that some interpreted as a cry for help.
Our hearts go out to Lil Tay’s family and friends during this difficult time. We hope that they can find peace and comfort in the memories of their loved one.
