The continuing resolution to keep the government funded and avert a government shutdown tonight at midnight has passed a key procedural vote in the Senate, and it will now see a final Senate floor vote.
As The Gateway Pundit’s Kristinn Taylor reported, Schumer announced in a Senate floor speech Thursday evening that he would not filibuster and will vote for cloture on the Republican continuing resolution to keep the federal government open and funded through the end of the current fiscal year, September 30, giving President Donald Trump a key early victory.
Schumer said, “While the CR bill is very bad…Allowing Donald Trump to take even more power via a government shutdown is a far worse option.” Schumer also said a shutdown would be like giving Trump, DOGE chief Elon Musk and OMB Director Russ Vought, “The keys to the city, state and country.”
Per CNN, “Nine Democrats and one independent who caucuses with Democrats joined Republicans this afternoon to advance the government funding bill in a key procedural step, as Congress faces a midnight deadline to avoid a government shutdown.”
The final vote was 62-38, and the final floor vote will be taken tonight. Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) was the only Republican to vote against the bill.
This is consistent with Rep. Thomas Massie’s prediction that while the vote would appear contentious, ultimately, eight Democrats will vote in favor of the bill, and it will pass. “It’s all a fake fight. You’re going to find this out when it goes over to the Senate and you have Democrats in the Senate voting for it,” Massie said on Monday.
As The Gateway Pundit reported, Massie, the lone House GOP no-vote on the CR, explained in a video why he voted no and revealed that House Speaker Mike Johnson cut another deal “with the Senate Democrats, Senate leadership, and even Hakeem Jeffries.”
Massie says the CR is another “UNIPARTY deal” that “doesn’t fund the wall” but “does fund USAID.”

However, President Trump wants the House and Senate to unanimously pass the bill to help him implement his agenda and has declared war on Massie, vowing to lead a primary challenge, a move many supporters disagree with. President Trump compared Massie to disgraced RINO warmonger Liz Cheney “before her historic, record breaking fall.”
CNN reports,
Now that the Senate has taken this procedural vote, the chamber will vote on four amendments to the government funding bill and then take a final passage vote on the measure.
These are the members of the Democratic caucus who voted to advance the measure:
- Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer
- Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin
- Senate Democratic Chief Deputy Whip Brian Schatz
- Sen. Kristen Gillibrand (the chair of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee)
- Sen. Maggie Hassan
- Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto
- Sen. John Fetterman
- Sen. Gary Peters
- Sen. Jeanne Shaheen
- Sen. Angus King (an independent who caucuses with Democrats)
